Vote no to Mayor Johnson’s Tax Increase

The Bring Home Chicago tax increase is a threat to Chicago’s neighborhood housing providers. Proponents of this property tax call it a tax on mansions. It’s not. It’s a tax on apartment buildings and commercial development—the two kinds of investment the city needs the most.

Half of American renters spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing costs — a key benchmark for affordability — with the financial strain rising the fastest for middle-class tenants.

I oppose the Bring Chicago Home tax increase for the following reasons:

• It is a tax on the city’s future. It means less new housing and fewer stores and businesses;
• This referendum does not make housing more affordable or more accessible;
• This property tax increase will make it harder to create and operate affordable housing;
• Almost 55% of Chicago families rent. They are being asked to shoulder the cost of this tax increase.

I stand with Chicago’s neighborhood housing providers and oppose the Bring Chicago Home tax increase. I pledge to vote note no on Mayor Johnson’s tax increase.
